Dungiven Castle was the ancestral home of the O'Cahan clan who ruled the area between the 12th and 17th Century. Danny Boy, one of the most recorded melodies ever composed was originally called O'Cahan’s Lament. The original version begins with an O'Cahan bard Rory Dall O'Cahan lamenting the passing of his great Chief, Cooey na Gall O'Cahan whose death brought to an end the line of O'Cahan chiefs of Ulster. He is buried in the Old Priory just a few minutes walk from Dungiven Castle.
Finvola, Gem of the Roe, daughter of Chieftain Dermot O'Cahan, married Angus McDonald and moved to Scotland. When she died a Banshee wailed until her body was brought home to Dungiven and laid to rest. Some say even to this day the Banshee can be heard crying for Finvola in the depths of a warm summer night.

"My husband, two friends & I stayed in Dungiven Castle in August. We were not disappointed. Beautiful old building, friendly staff and great hospitality from the female owner made our stay at the castle very enjoyable. Meal in restaurant was also excellent. Would recommend to friends."
"What can I say "Incredible"!! Food, accommodation and hospitality were absolutely fantastic. Donna and Noel are just wonderful hosts and Donna is so enthusiastic and full of great information on the local area. I also felt it was like being in someone's home as a guest, not just a hotel. It has made our wedding anniversary something we will always remember, and our children loved the garden and wood walk in the castle ground. .. Beautiful bird life and lovely wildflowers too... I've stayed in a lot of accommodation around the world, but his is tops in my estimation 10/10 Highly recommended "
